What the INTP personality is like

A curious, original thinker, you're happiest chasing an idea to its logical end, and few things satisfy you like an elegant explanation for how something works.

You prize precision and intellectual honesty, and you're skeptical of anything that can't survive a good argument.

INTP strengths

  • Analytical and objective
  • Original, inventive ideas
  • Open-minded
  • Honest and straightforward

INTP weak points

  • Can over-analyze and stall on action
  • May neglect practical details
  • Withdrawn or absent-minded
  • Dismissive of rules and routine

INTP at work and best careers

INTPs thrive on puzzles. They want to understand a system completely, question its assumptions and find a more elegant model. Flexible schedules, interesting problems and room to explore suit them; strict routines, heavy admin and office politics do not. They can produce brilliant insights but may lose interest once the hard thinking is done and only the finishing work is left.

  • Software developer
  • Mathematician
  • Philosopher or academic
  • Systems analyst
  • Physicist
  • Game designer

INTP in relationships

INTPs are relaxed, accepting partners who give others a lot of freedom. They connect through ideas and shared curiosity, and their affection can be subtle. They may need reminders that feelings are worth talking about, and they appreciate a partner who will not take their quiet thinking time personally.

Growth tips for INTPs

  • Set a "done" line before you start, so projects get finished, not only explored.
  • Check in on people's feelings, not just the logic of what they said.
  • Turn one interesting idea per month into something real you can show.

The four letters

  • I Introversion: recharges with quiet time and thinks things through before speaking.
  • N Intuition: focuses on patterns, meanings and future possibilities.
  • T Thinking: decides with logic and consistent principles.
  • P Perceiving: prefers to stay flexible and keep options open.

INTP cognitive functions

  • Ti Introverted Thinking dominant
Builds an exact inner logical model and checks ideas against it.
  • Ne Extraverted Intuition auxiliary
Explores possibilities, connections and new ideas in the outside world.
  • Si Introverted Sensing tertiary
Relies on past experience, details and what has proven to work.
  • Fe Extraverted Feeling inferior
Tunes into other people's feelings and keeps the group in harmony.

Function stacks come from Jungian type theory. The GeekTools test measures the four letters only.

Frequently asked questions

How rare is the INTP personality type?

INTP is a less common type: about 3.3% of people in the large US sample used for the MBTI Manual, which makes it the 11th most common of the 16 types. In that sample the most common type is ISFJ (13.8%) and the rarest is INFJ (1.5%).

What is the opposite of INTP?

The opposite type is ESFJ (The Consul), with all four letters reversed. Opposite types see the world very differently, which can cause friction, but in a team they also cover each other's blind spots.

What jobs are good for an INTP?

Careers that often suit INTPs include software developer, mathematician, philosopher or academic, systems analyst, physicist and game designer. The environment matters more than the job title: INTPs thrive on puzzles.

What are the INTP cognitive functions?

In order, from strongest to least developed: Ti (Introverted Thinking), Ne (Extraverted Intuition), Si (Introverted Sensing), Fe (Extraverted Feeling). The GeekTools test measures the four letters, not the functions, so treat this as background reading.

How do I know if I am an INTP?

Take the free 48-question MBTI test on GeekTools; it takes about 5 to 7 minutes and shows how strongly you lean on each letter. If a letter is close to 50%, also read the profile of the neighbouring type, such as INTJ (The Architect).
