What this IQ test measures

The test has 20 questions, 5 from each of four areas. Classic IQ tests use the same kinds of tasks. Here is one example of each (these examples are not in the test).

Numerical

Find the rule behind a number series: adding, multiplying, squares or steps that grow.

Example 3, 6, 12, 24, ?
Answer 48: each number is twice the one before.

Logical

Draw a correct conclusion from facts, and spot the item that does not belong to a group.

Example All roses are flowers. Some flowers fade quickly. Must some roses fade quickly?
Answer No: the flowers that fade quickly may not be roses.

Verbal

See how two words are related, then find a word with the same relation.

Example Bird is to Nest as Bee is to ___?
Answer Hive: the home of each animal.

Spatial

Find the pattern in a 3 × 3 grid of shapes and choose the missing piece.

Example In each row, an arrow turns 90° clockwise from one cell to the next.
Answer The missing cell shows the arrow turned 90° once more.

What IQ scores mean

IQ scores are set so that the average is 100 and the standard deviation is 15. About two out of three people score between 85 and 115, and about 95% score between 70 and 130.

IQ scoreRangeShare of people
130 and aboveVery highabout 2%
120–129Highabout 7%
110–119Above averageabout 16%
90–109Averageabout 50%
80–89Below averageabout 16%
Below 80Lowabout 9%

Percentiles: an IQ of 115 is higher than about 84% of people, 130 is higher than about 98%, and 145 is higher than about 99.9%.

How your score is calculated

You have 12 minutes for 20 questions. Each correct answer is 1 point. A wrong or empty answer is 0 points, so a guess is always better than no answer.

Your raw score (0 to 20) is compared with an expected difficulty curve, on which an average person gets about half of the questions right. It is then converted to the standard IQ scale (mean 100, standard deviation 15) and kept within 55 to 145. The percentile comes from the same normal curve, so the two numbers always agree.

Everything runs in your browser. Your answers are never sent to a server, and only your last result is saved on this device. You can share a link that shows your score and the four category bars.

Tips for a fair result

  • Take the test in a quiet place where nobody interrupts you for 12 minutes.
  • Do not use a calculator, a search engine or help from other people.
  • Your first attempt counts most. On a retake you remember the questions, so the score goes up.
  • If you are stuck, pick your best guess and move on. The Back button lets you return later.
  • On a keyboard, press 1 to 4 to choose an answer and Enter to go to the next question.

Frequently asked questions

Is this IQ test really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no email and no payment. You see your full score, percentile and category breakdown as soon as you finish.

What is an average IQ score?

100 is the average by definition. About 68% of people score between 85 and 115, so any score in that range is normal.

What is a good IQ score?

A score from 110 to 119 is above average, 120 to 129 is high, and 130 or more is very high (about the top 2%). But one number says little about creativity, knowledge or hard work.

Is this an official IQ test?

No. Official IQ tests such as the WAIS or the Stanford-Binet are given by a trained psychologist, take about 60 to 90 minutes and are scored against large groups of people. This short online test gives an informal estimate for fun and practice.

How long does the test take?

There is a 12-minute limit for the 20 questions. Many people finish in 8 to 12 minutes. When the time runs out, the test ends and scores the answers you gave.

Can I improve my IQ score?

Practice with these kinds of puzzles makes you faster, so your score on similar tests usually goes up a little. Good sleep and focus also help on the day. General reasoning ability changes much more slowly.

Why is my score different on another test?

Each test uses different questions, time limits and score tables. Short tests are less precise, so a difference of 10 points or more between two online tests is common.
